Urban Matter is a people centred studio for urban planning, architecture and design. It is founded by Alexander Chemyakin in Amsterdam.
In the nearby future Moscow will get a new satellite city for 150.000 people. For this project local developer Masshtab has organized a competition for a residential block in which Urban Matter took part. Urban Matter designed this studio apartment building for a local private developer in Utrecht as part of a neighborhood regeneration project. The program includes three levels of rental studios above ground floor commercial space. Responding to a growing demand for compact rental studios Urban Matter explored in-depth the idea of a compact inner city format for living.

Amsterdam North is a city district going through a major transformation. Urban Matter developed the concept for a mixed use development on the northern bank of the river IJ as part of this transformation process. We approached this 3,2 ha site, surrounded by water by recognizing its prominent role in rebuilding the river frontier and the North River walkway.

The Algarve Energy Park is an initiative to build a model sustainable cluster community in the south of Portugal. It aspires to attract leading partners in the renewable energy and preventive healthcare sectors. Urban Matter was asked to design the master plan for this ambitious program with a Renewable Technology Center as the key part of the project.

Everything seems to be green these days. And we are not just talking about a springtime. As F. Jodidio wrote in his recently published Green Architecture Now, “green is the name of the game”. “Sustainable” is everywhere from consumer products to professional talks, and urbanism is no exception. Sustainability has been an issue in urban planning for many years, but now it is top of the agenda.
