In the northwest of the Morvan area in France stands a barn dating from the year 1884. It is a stone construction with an open wooden stable at the back which offers a view on an orchard with fruit trees.

View of the barn with the open stable and orchard on the left hand side.

Back facade and sloping terrain.

The inside space of the barn is entirely empty and contains a characteristic wooden roof construction. The client's objective is to transform the barn into a private dwelling where he can comfortably lead the remainder of his life.

The beautifull space is naturally divided into three equal spans by the two big roof frames.

Plans of the existing situation.

The span on the street side (left) has been insulated and made separable to avoid high heating expenses in winter times. The remaining spans are lofty and open and allow for the grand space to be fully experienced. The open stable at the back of the barn provides a comfortable covered outside space with a great view, accesable from the kitchen. Openings in the back facade, outside stairs and an inside stairs provide for natural ways of circulating through the complex.

Rooms, floors, voids, stairs and a central fire place are alle accomodated within a grid like construction of square Oak posts and beams. The big void between the principle inside facade and the mezzanine allows for play of light and great visual connections.
