Urban Matter is a people centred studio for urban planning, architecture and design. It is founded by Jasper Hermans and Alexander Chemyakin in Amsterdam.
In the nearby future Moscow will get a new satellite city for 150.000 people. For this project local developer Masshtab has organized a competition for a residential block in which Urban Matter took part. The Thing Itself is a constantly evolving concept created by artist Joris Brouwers. It symbolizes the essence of the things we all search for but only seem to approach at best. Urban Matter served as a catalyst to help The Thing Itself shape shift into a new obscure embodiment of its own conceptual meaning. read more
Together with architect Rolf Reichardt, Urban Matter entered into a competition to design follies as part of an art route running through the landscape of the Lingewaard. The objective of the competition is to have people come and visit the area for its unique combination of art, industrial history, landscape and water.
In the northwest of the Morvan area in France stands a barn dating from the year 1884. It is a stone construction with an open wooden stable at the back which offers a view on an orchard with fruit trees.
Urban Matter designed this studio apartment building for a local private developer in Utrecht as part of a neighborhood regeneration project. The program includes three levels of rental studios above ground floor commercial space. Responding to a growing demand for compact rental studios Urban Matter explored in-depth the idea of a compact inner city format for living.

Amsterdam North is a city district going through a major transformation. Urban Matter developed the concept for a mixed use development on the northern bank of the river IJ as part of this transformation process. We approached this 3,2 ha site, surrounded by water by recognizing its prominent role in rebuilding the river frontier and the North River walkway.

The Algarve Energy Park is an initiative to build a model sustainable cluster community in the south of Portugal. It aspires to attract leading partners in the renewable energy and preventive healthcare sectors. Urban Matter was asked to design the master plan for this ambitious program with a Renewable Technology Center as the key part of the project.

Everything seems to be green these days. And we are not just talking about a springtime. As F. Jodidio wrote in his recently published Green Architecture Now, “green is the name of the game”. “Sustainable” is everywhere from consumer products to professional talks, and urbanism is no exception. Sustainability has been an issue in urban planning for many years, but now it is top of the agenda.
